Kids and Eye Exams

Vision can impact a child’s ability to learn as more than 70% of what they learn at school is visual. Developmentally, children reach 20/20 by the time they are 3-5 years old. School vision screenings miss up to 75% of children with vision problems. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 40% of kids in the U.S. have nearsightedness compared to just 20% three decades ago. If your student hasn’t seen a doctor of ophthalmology, it’s time to schedule an appointment.

If your student is having trouble in class or the teacher is expressing concerns, it may be that your child can’t see and is experiencing frustration and acting out. Here are common concerns to consider:

  • Not paying attention or fidgeting and unable to sit still
  • Organization, comprehension, or reading difficulties
  • Losing interest in school and activities previously enjoyed
  • Poor spelling
  • Frequently squinting
  • Red, irritated eyes, or rubbing the eyes
  • Moving closer to the smartboard or wanting to sit up front

If your student is experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule an eye appointment for your kid.
